Thomas Speirs outpunches opponent at provincial championships

Thomas Speirs is one step closer to taking his fists back to the senior national boxing championships.

The 20-year-old Spruce Capital Warriors Boxing Club member won his semifinal bout Sunday at the provincial championships in Surrey. Speirs, the defending B.C. champ, defeated Dan Csazar of Abbotsford 9-4.

It was the only bout of the weekend for Speirs, who earned a bye into the semifinals. Five fighters entered the 75kg weight class. Speirs will return to the Lower Mainland to take on Robert Couzens of Burnaby in the provincial box-offs, Nov. 20 in Mission.

"Everybody was impressed with Thomas," said Spruce Capital coach Wayne Sponagle. "He was very sick last week and almost didn't make the trip. He still fought good but he got a little tired toward the end."

Speirs was also nursing an injured right hand.
