PGTFC athletes blaze trail at Jack Brow meet

On a blazing 38 C day in Kelowna at the Jack Brow Memorial track and field meet, the 17-year-old Medina won the senior boys long jump, traveling 6.45 metres.

Medina was part of a 30-athlete contingent from the Prince George Track and Field Club which competed in the three-day meet which wrapped up Sunday. All 30 PGTFC members achieved personal bests in Kelowna.

Shelby Jansen's ran a PB while winning the 100m event and also set a personal record of 59.64 seconds in the 400m race to earn the silver medal.

In other results, Ryan Gaiesky won gold in the 110m hurdles and placed fourth in the 400m hurdles; Lauren Matheson ended up fourth in the 100m final with a time of 13.22 seconds and was sixth in the 200m; Lindsay King won silver in the 200m hurdles and placed fifth in the 80m hurdles.

The Nemethys of Vanderhoof also found their way to the medal podium. Alex Nemethy clinched silver in the 80m race and won bronze in the 1,500m event. His brother Simon won bronze in the 800m and 2,000m race and was fifth in the 1,200m run. Their father Brian lapped the field in the masters 5,000m race to win gold.

In field events, Carly Frenkel won gold in the hammer throw and triple jump and her father Brad Frenkel was fourth in the discus and hammer. Owen McKee placed second in the discus, fourth in javelin and placed in the top 10 in long jump and 80m hurdles. Olivia Masich PB'd in the 10-year-old girls shot put.

Cassidy Campbell, 12, earned gold in the four events -- hammer, discus, shot put and javelin and is entered in the junior development provincial meet in Kamloops, July 17-19.

Cole Dinsdale tracked down a pair of fourth-place results in the 800m and 2,000m, while Zach Matyas won the men's 1,500m and was a bronze medalist in the 800m.

Track rookie Grace Cross, 9, and 10-year-old Morgan Wiebe were gold medalists in their respective 100m races, claimed bronze in the 60m hurdles, 600m and 60m runs and were fourth in the 100m. Rachel Kidd advanced to the midget girls 100m final with a PB and also set a new personal record in the long jump while finishing sixth in each event. Kidd also placed fifth in the 200m hurdles.

Emma Loog was ninth in the 100m, 11th in the 300m and 12th in the 200m.

Brooklyn Stauffer was 12th in the 300m, while Morgan Malrocki posted top-20 results in the long jump and 100m.

Erica Turgeon was second in the 13-year-old girls 100m, third in long jump and sixth in the 200m. She also placed fourth in discus, seventh in 200 hurdles, and 11th in 80m hurdles.

Tanner Matheson was fifth in the 13-year-old boys 100m race and fourth in shot put with a personal-best throw of 8.42m. Max Schonewille won silver in the javelin throw and bronze in the hammer toss. Emmeline LeClerc was a gold medalist in hammer and win bronze in the 300m. Gracie Green, 12, was third in the 200m, while Rohan Soares soared to a personal best as silver medalist in the high jump, was third in discus, fifth in the 100m and sixth in the long jump.

Next up for the 14-and-older PGTFC athletes is the B.C. championship jamboree in Nanaimo, July 10-12. The meet is the final qualifier for the Legion national championships in Ste-Therese,Que., August 7-9.

PGTFC member Alyx Treasure is scheduled to compete in the Canadian track and field championships in Edmonton on Saturday starting at 11 a.m., PDT. Live internet coverage of the event is on cbc.ca.
