PGSS boys impressive in Grande Prairie

Talk about a great way to open the season.

Talk about a great way to open the season.

The PGSS Polars senior boys basketball team had only eight players to work with on the weekend in Grande Prairie, but rolled through the opposition in winning four times in as many outings at the eight-team Grand Prairie Regional College tournament.

On Friday, PGSS opened with a 76-53 drubbing of Peace River high school, then outlasted Peace Wapiti high school in a 76-69 victory.

On Saturday, the Cory Antrim-coached Polars defeated the defending champions, Grande Prairie composite school, 67-61, holding off a team known for its full-court press. In the final outing, PGSS handily defeated High Level high school 75-60.

"It seemed as the games went on, our team got stronger as the other teams wore down," said Antrim, the former head coach at Kelly Road.

"It was all heart, and the players were only allowed to be tired after the game was over, which they were."

With Tyson Plain injured, Antrim rotated through a roster comprised of Chad Leslie, Karn Kandola, Nick Novack, Sagar Sandhu, Brennyn Gray, Lucky Johal, Ryan Gill and Josh Letendre, who was named tournament MVP."
