The host girls edged out a pair of rivals to claim first place in the team category at the Kelly Road Invitational high school wrestling competition Saturday, while the Nechako Valley Vikings (Vanderhoof) earned top team honours for boys.
The KRSS Roadrunners girls accumulated 24 points to claim the title over Fort St. John with 23 points and the D.P. Todd Trojans with 22 points. Smithers was next at 20 points followed by Mackenzie at 12, and 100 Mile House with 10. There were 16 girls grappling in six categories with the 57-kilogram division having the stiffest competition with four wrestlers. Marina Dykstra of 100 Mile House earned the victory in the category over the Roadrunners Hailee Pitkethly.
Kim Smith of D.P. Todd finished first in the 69-kilogram division, while the Roadrunners' Megan Beaupre was the default champion in the 51-kilogram class as the only entrant.
In boys' action, the Vikings earned a 12-point victory over the Prince George Secondary Polars scoring 60 points. The 48 points the Polars earned were enough to beat out the Roadrunners - 41 points - for second place. The final three teams at the competition were: Houston (36 points); D.P. Todd (34 points) and Williams Lake (27 points).
In the 13 weight classes, seven athletes from Prince George placed first with the Polars claiming three gold medals - Braiden Van Grootel, 45-kilograms; Jagraj Sandu, 54-kilograms; and Rilker Jhander, 90-kilograms - and the Trojans and Roadrunners earning two apiece. The Trojans Eric Halsall, 63-kilograms, and Tristan Bereron, 78-kilograms, won their classes, while the Roadrunners first-place medals came from Jordan Marshall, 60-kilograms, and Ryley Tarrant, 110-kilograms.
The next tournament for the wrestlers is the inter provincial 2012 Western Canada age class event Friday and Saturday in Kamloops.
