Last weekend it was too cold to race.

This weekend, with rain and a high of 6 C expected Saturday they might need umbrellas at the Canmore Nordic Centre.

But rain or shine, a group of Prince George biathletes from the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club will be there with their skis on and rifles loaded to try to qualify for the Canada Winter Games at the North American Cup No. 2 event.

Sarah Beaudry will race this weekend but is already pre-qualified for Canada Games. However, Beaudry has confirmed she won't be competing in Games events in Prince George Feb. 13-20 because she will be in Belarus for the junior/youth world championships. This is her last year to compete on the world stage as a junior athlete.

"This was a hard decision for Sarah, but now that she is on the senior national team and competing on the international circuit [IBU Cup], trying to get another podium finish at the junior world championships is the more appropriate choice for her," said Pierre Beaudry, Sarah's father, in an email to the Citizen.

Two other Caledonia athletes -- Emily Dickson and Arthur Roots -- could make the grade to represent Canada at the junior national team based on their North America Cup race results this weekend. Dickson and Roots are also in the mix for the Canada Games team.

Five other Caledonia biathletes are entered in the Canmore races, including Claire Lapointe,Bobby Kreitz, Logan Sherba, Colton McDougal and Mark Hartley.

Results from those races will be posted on zone4.ca.
