The Viking Construction Cougars expected to have a hard time building a winning record at provincials. Their first two games served as confirmation.
At the B.C. Hockey peewee Tier 1 championship, which started Sunday at the Kin Centre, the Cats took on two powerhouse clubs from the Lower Mainland and endured two lopsided losses. Sunday morning, the 11- and 12-year-old Cougars lost 10-1 to Langley. On Sunday night, the Cats were back on the ice against the North Shore Winter Club and fell 14-1.
"The boys are upset of course, and I'd be disappointed if they weren't," said Cougars head coach Adrien Chabot. "But, they realize the competition. We made them vow that they've got to keep positive. We've got another tough game against Burnaby [today] so we want everybody to show up, kind of put these games behind them, and be ready."
The Cougars are the lowest-seeded club in the six-team tournament.
In the game against Langley, Korbyn Chabot scored the Prince George goal after he took a nice cross-ice pass from James Gordon. Chabot's marker tied the score 1-1, but, after that, it was all Langley, which scored four power-play goals.
"It didn't really seem like a 10-1 game," coach Chabot said.
Rylan Anderson and Devyn Wasylyshen shared the goaltending chores for Prince George.
Against North Shore, defenceman Jeremy Gervais did the offensive damage. He snuck in from his spot on the point and accepted a pass from Gordon, who was positioned behind the goal line. Gervais was left with a tap-in on the short side.
In goal, the Cats went with Wasylyshen for the majority of the game and then gave affiliated player Jacob Sweet some time between the pipes. Anderson, because of illness, was unavailable for duty.
The Cougars will face the Burnaby Winter Club at 5:30 today.
