OT win sends Ontario to gold-medal game

Ontario and Manitoba will play for ringette gold at the Canada Winter Games. In semifinals held Thursday at the Coliseum, Ontario skated to a 4-3 overtime decision against Quebec, while Manitoba downed New Brunswick 7-4.

In Ontario's dramatic win, Abby Richardson played hero when she scored at 3:53 of the OT period. Ontario's other three goals were all courtesy of Sydney Nosal. Catherine Ruel and Justine Lapointe, with a pair, replied for Quebec.

In Manitoba's victory against New Brunswick, Keyona Tomiuk fired a hat trick for the winners, who also got goals from Katie Smith, Janelle Wotherspoon, Taylor Wyatt and Kelly Arran. New Brunswick goalscorers were Jenny Snowdon and Britney Snowdon, each with two.

Today's gold-medal game is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Coliseum. Quebec and New Brunswick will battle for bronze at 2 p.m.

In a placement game on Thursday, B.C. downed Saskatchewan 7-6 in overtime on a goal by Angela Cichos. Brook Hay scored twice for B.C., which got its other markers from Riley Pickrell, Kairo Mair, Teigan Moore and Nina Tajbashkh. Team B.C. features Sydney Irving of Prince George and she had two assists in the contest.

Golden Ring

Scott Ring of New Brunswick landed on top of the medal podium on Thursday.

Ring, from St. George, was the gold-medalist in target shooting (air pistol, individual male) with a point total of 192.0. Stuart Burns of Ontario took the silver medal (189.4) and Saskatchewan's Michael Banman was on target for bronze (166.1).

In women's competition, Krista Hildebrand of Manitoba won a gold-medal battle against Veronica Schulze of Alberta. Hildebrand's final total was 195.7, while Schulze - who settled for silver - topped out at 194.2. Jessica Auton of Langley won the bronze medal with 170.9 points.

Target shooting was held at the College of New Caledonia. Thursday was the final day of competition.
