Not sitting around at 68

Seniors Games medal haul for city track athlete

In her 68 years on this earth, Cris MacDonald had never before entered an athletic competition.

After having such a great time at the B.C. Seniors Games -- and winning seven medals in seven events -- she's looking ahead to future challenges.

At the Games, which wrapped up Saturday in Campbell River and the Comox Valley, MacDonald proved to be a force in track and field. In her 65 to 69 age category, she won silver medals in a 10-kilometre road walk, a relay race, long jump and triple jump. In a 5,000m power walk, another relay and javelin, she was awarded bronze medals.

MacDonald didn't expect to do so well. In fact, her reason for competing at the 55-and-over Games had nothing to do with winning or losing.

"I was bored with life, and I've been walking at the track and just met people," she said. "They were saying, 'Why don't you (enter the Games?).' We met other people and then we got in with Zone 9 and starting practicing.
