In their first action of 2012 the Prince George WIC Female Bantam Tier 1 Cougars earned a pair of exhibition wins in Grande Prairie last weekend.

Saturday the Cougars edged the Storm - of the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League - 3-2 before skating to a 1-0 win Sunday despite being out shot 25-21.

Don Knoop, coach of the Cougars, said goaltender Avery Quiring was stellar as Prince George was out shot for the first time this season.

Knoop and co-coach Stew Malgunas liked what they saw from the girls.

"We were very happy with the girls first performance of the second half," said Knoop. "The work ethic and focus on team systems and team game plans was exceptional."

The Cougars next action is Feb. 3 to 5 when they travel to the Lower Mainland for the Surrey Tournament of Hearts.

Several players from the Cougars spent the layoff between games in 2011 and 2012 trying out for Team Northeast at the BC winter games in Vernon from Feb. 23 to 26. Nine girls from Prince George made the team: Megan Hickey; Carla Goodwin; Madison Fjellstrom; Sabrina Knoop; Jayden Malgunas; Kiana Wilkinson; Jocelyn Forrest; Sydney Irving and Avery Quiring.

Team Northeast will play in Pool A against the teams from Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley and Kootenay. Games begin Feb. 24.
