Jayan Nickolet and her B.C. 13-and-under girls select baseball squad won the silver medal at the Western Canadian peewee girls invitational tournament in Spruce Grove, Alta., on the weekend.
B.C. was shut out 10-0 in six innings to host Alberta in Sunday's championship game.
Nickolet, a 13-year-old pitcher from Mackenzie, came on in relief in the fourth inning when B.C. trailed 7-0.
Nickolet quickly got two outs to keep B.C.'s hopes alive, but Alberta didn't waver and the game was called in the sixth with a 10-run rule called into effect against B.C.
B.C. finished the round-robin in second place, posting a 2-1 record with victories against Saskatchewan (17-6, in five innings) and Manitoba (24-10, in five innings). Its only loss was against Alberta (18-15).
In Game 1 against Saskatchewan, Nickolet relieved B.C.'s starting pitcher and struck out three batters in a row. She was also dangerous at the plate, blasting a base-clearing triple to extend B.C.'s lead to 11-4 after three innings.
While Nickolet didn't see any action on the mound in B.C.'s final round-robin loss to Alberta, she was named MVP for her consistent production at the plate.
