After leading the UNBC Timberwolves women's basketball team to a pair of key victories, Maria Mongomo was named a Canada West star of the week on Tuesday.

Mongomo, a second-year guard/forward for the Timberwolves, was picked as the female third star in the conference. Last Friday, she had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a 70-48 home-court victory against the Mount Royal University Cougars. The next night, Mongomo hit for 15 points and added 11 rebounds and two helpers in a 64-55 decision against the Calgary-based Cougars.

With the sweep of Mount Royal, the T-wolves improved to 5-9 on the season and moved into 11th place in the standings. The top 12 in the 17-team league will qualify for playoffs.

Mongomo, from Las Palmas, Spain, is averaging 15.9 points per game, ninth-best in Canada West. Her 8.4 rebounds per contest have her seventh in league average and her 3.1 assists per outing rank her 10th in that category.

Mongomo and the Timberwolves will continue their playoff quest Friday and Saturday in Winnipeg when they take on the University of Manitoba Bisons, who are last in the league with a 1-11 record.

Former Prince George Cougars defenceman Jesse Forsberg was named the male second star after a big weekend for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies hockey team. Forsberg helped the second-ranked Huskies to a 4-0 Friday win against the No. 7 Calgary Dinos and, on Saturday, had three goals and an assist in an 8-2 drubbing of the Dinos.

Forsberg, with 23 points, is leading the Huskies in scoring, the first defenceman to do that since Dave Dunn in 1969-70. In Canada West, Forsberg is second among all skaters in points.

Forsberg is in his third season of eligibility with the Huskies.
