If Joey Matzelle had any doubts about that, they were erased this past weekend in Kamloops.

Matzelle and his mom, Denise, were representing Prince George at the Cactus Classic BMX Nationals. In Saturday racing, Denise was the first rider across the finish line in her category. Then, on Sunday, she pedaled to second spot.

Joey had a pretty good weekend himself. In two different divisions, he posted second- and fourth-place finishes on both days.

A total of 19 other local riders also attended the event and one of them, six-year-old Damian Georgyev, landed on the podium both days. Georgyev finished third on Saturday and moved up to second on Sunday.

Other results were as follows: Alyssa Goulet, sixth on Saturday, second on Sunday; Nicholas Braaten, fifth on Saturday, third on Sunday; Tyler Braaten, fourth on Saturday, third on Sunday; Austen Nickerson, sixth on Saturday; Zach Parlee, third on Sunday; Wendy Framst, fifth on Sunday; Ethan Porter, seventh on Sunday; Brady Anderson, sixth on Sunday; and Haydon Albright, fifth on Sunday.

The next race in the national series will be held in Nanaimo in July. Prince George will host a national event in August.
