The Sun Life Financial midget tier 2 Cougars claimed their first title of the season Sunday, defeating Terrace 4-2 in the championship game of the Fort St. John hockey tournament.

Darrian Estey and Daylan Ouellette each scored a pair of goals to spice the Cougar offence in the final. Colten Braid countered with a two-goal effort for Terrace.

Cougars game MVP Dylan Quinn made 29 saves in net to lock up the victory and overshadow a solid outing from Terrace goalie Kyle Gray.

"Their goalie was their MVP as well, both goalies played very well," said Cougars head coach Wes Scott.

"That's our first tournament win. Last time, right before Christmas, we were second in Williams Lake and we were third in Prince George, so we're climbing the ladder here. We've had a successful year but I don't want us to peak too early."

The Cougars lost 4-3 to Terrace in round-robin play, their only loss of the tournament.

"Both games against Terrace were barnburners," Scott said.

In other results, the Cougars defeated Dawson Creek 9-3, and they shut out Fort St. John 7-0.

The Cougars are trying to advance to the provincial championship in Salmon Arm, which starts March 20. To get that far, they will have to defeat Williams Lake, their main rivals in the northern central interior zone.

The Cougars will be in Quesnel this weekend for Cariboo Amateur Hockey Association league games. Their next tournament action is in February in Dawson Creek.
