The midget Tier 2 Cougars claimed a Cariboo Amateur Hockey Association playoff championship and a berth in provincials when they defeated Williams Lake 2-1 in a best-of-three weekend series.

The 15- to 17-year-old Cats lost the series opener 1-0 but rebounded with 4-2 and 6-0 victories.

In the first game, Prince George goalie Kyle Wilson gave a stellar performance -- stopping 26 of 27 shots -- but his teammates couldn't generate much in the way of offence.

In Game 2, Gabe Mason fired two goals and added an assist to lead the Cougars to the win.

In the deciding contest, the Cats led 1-0 after the first period on an early goal by Taylor Barber. In the opening moments of the second, Donovan Law gave Prince George a 2-0 advantage and the team was on its way to the convincing win. Law finished with two goals and Wilson picked up the shutout.

So far this season, the Cougars have a 35-18-4 record. Since Christmas, they have gone 18-2-2.

The provincial championship tournament is March 18-23 in Saanich.
