Matzelle a big winner at BMX grand nationals

It's a long road from Prince George to Chilliwack. Joey Matzelle made that trip worthwhile.

It's a long road from Prince George to Chilliwack.

Joey Matzelle made that trip worthwhile.

The Supertrak BMX Club rider came home packing two huge trophies after he put the moves on the rest of a five-rider field and won the 16-year-old cruiser titles Saturday and Sunday at the American Bicycle Association BMX grand nationals in Chilliwack. Matzelle, a member of the O Zone riding team, followed that up with a third-place finish in the 16 expert class, and was fifth in that class on Sunday.

It was a good weekend all-around for the Matzelle family. Denise Matzelle won the 41-45-year-old girls cruiser class on Saturday, then placed third on Sunday. Her daughter Lisa was fifth in the girls pro class Saturday.

In other Supertrak results, 11-year-old expert Lynden Chartand started the weekend off with a win in the pre-race Friday, was fifth in Saturday's race, then claimed victory over seven others in Sunday's grand national finale.

Tyler Pierce raced to a sixth-place finish in the A pro event Saturday. Derrick Pierce (15 expert) placed third in the pre-race, eighth in the first grand national and fifth in Sunday's race.

Gavin Rowell (11-year-old novice) topped the podium Saturday, then rode to a third-place finish Sunday. Kyle Rowell (14 novice) was third both days. Nathan Findlay (13 expert) got to the finish fifth in the pre-race and eighth in Saturday's grand national.

Six-year-old expert Damien Georgyev of Goertzen Racing Academy was a third-place grand national finisher both days. Tyler Braaten, a sponsored rider from Koops Crew, was third in Sunday's 10-year-old expert event. Alyssa Goulet, of Cyclepath-MBX Hex, placed second in the 10-year-old girls pre-race, was fourth on Saturday, and second on Sunday.

Katrina Framst of NR Motorsports was a model of consistency, finishing second in all three 14-year-old girls races, as was Shayna Findlay, who was third in all three 17-year-old girls events.

Taylor Pacaud placed fourth Saturday and third Sunday in 16 intermediate class.

Other pre-race winners were Haydon Albright (15-year-old expert boys) and Chase Breedin (10-year-old novice boys), while Zachary Parlee (11 expert) and Dagan Scott (14 expert) both placed third, and Nicholas Braaten (seven-year-old expert) was fourth. Jon Anderson was eighth in the eight-year-old expert pre-race, Devin Peterson was seventh in nine-year-old intermediate, just ahead of Alex Framst, who was eighth. Brady Anderson (12 expert) was eighth in the pre-race.
