Mid-distance runner Geoff Martinson took one step closer to a medal Friday at the senior national track and field championships in Calgary.

The 25-year-old from Prince George qualified for the men's 1,500-metre final, winning his heat in 3:49.54, the third-quickest time in Friday's semifinal round.

Taylor Milne clocked 3:48.10 and Nathan Brannen ran a time of 3:48.44 to win their respective heats. Milne, Brannen and Martinson, who now lives in Victoria, will be the medal favourites in today's final (2:20 PT).

Meanwhile, in the women's high jump, Alyx Treasure of Prince George, 19, finished fifth in the senior competition. Treasure, who has successfully jumped 1.82 metres, cleared 1.76m on her third attempt Friday but was unable to beat that mark.

"It was pretty messy, my jumps were all over the place -- one minute I was jumping well and the next I was jumping horribly -- but I made the heights I needed to make so that was OK," said Treasure. "

Treasure is has now qualified for the junior national championships next month in Regina.

Jillian Drouin of Sarnia won gold with a leap of 1.84m. Holly Parent of Victoria and bronze medalist Sarah Boyle of Toronto each made it over 1.81m. Parent was awarded the silver medal because she required less attempts than Boyle to reach that distance.

One other Prince George Track and Field Club member, Kevin Gaiesky, 18, is entered in the 10km racewalk this morning.

The meet will be broadcast today on CBC television from 1-3 p.m. PT.
