Geoff Martinson of Prince George is one of the top three seeds in today's 1,500-metre run at the senior national track and field championships in Calgary.

The 25-year-old Prince George Track and Field Club member has the third-fastest seed time (3:39.58) in the country this season and heads a list of 11 runners in Heat 3 of today's semifinal round, which starts at 5:30 p.m. MT.

Martinson faces stiff opposition from the two runners seeded ahead of him. Top-ranked Taylor Milne of Callander, Ont., has a seed time of 3:36.30, while second-seeded Nate Brannan of Cambridge, Ont., has a qualifying time of 3:36.98. Both competed for Canada at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and Brannan won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

At the same time the 1,500m semifinals begin, the women's high jump final gets underway, and Alyx Treasure of Prince George will be making her fourth attempt to add a senior national title to her resume. The 19-year-old Treasure is seeded fourth, at 1.80 metres. Jillian Drouin of Sarnia is the top seed at 1.89m.

One other PGTFC member, 10-kilometre racewalker Kevin Gaiesky, 18, is one of three junior-aged competitors scheduled to compete in the senior event, which starts Saturday morning at 9:15 MT. Gaiesky plans to use the event to give him a qualifying time for the CanAm racewalk later this summer in Boston, Mass.
