Making the pitch for baseball nationals

Virginia Sprangers is going to bat for Prince George baseball this weekend.

As one of the presenters of a bid to host the 2012 Baseball Canada Senior Championship, Sprangers has every reason to believe Citizen Field will be chosen as the site of the four-day tournament, which will take place Aug. 23-26, 2012.

Kelowna and Trail are also competing for the right to be the host city, and Sprangers thinks the three-person committee that meets Saturday in Surrey to decide on the winning bid will like what Prince George has to offer.

"Absolutely, I have the confidence and the faith of the community and the people who have been part of this that it's going to be an exceptional presentation," said Sprangers, the bid committee chair.

"There's been a lot of support from businesses and a great deal of support from the local sports leagues (Prince George Senior and Prince George Youth baseball associations)."

The committee, in its feasibility study, looked at the city's infrastructure, volunteer base, sports, facilities, transportation, food services, accommodation, and the tourism opportunities for visitors and determined Prince George, would support an event it last hosted in 2002 at the now-demolished Monty Gabriele Park.

Sprangers also pointed to the success of the Word Baseball Challenge international tournament played in 2009 at Citizen Field as a factor that could help sway the national bid in Prince George's favour. Rotary Field would also be used for the 2012 nationals.
