The major midget Cariboo Cougars opened the hockey season with a pair of wins over the visiting Fraser Valley Bruins on the weekend.
The Cougars earned a 6-1 win in their home opener Saturday night at Kin 1, before completing the sweep Sunday morning with a 3-2 win in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League.
Sunday the Cougars received a pair of power-play goals from captain Tanner Fjellstrom, including the game winner midway throught the second period. Eli Jarvis also scored for Cariboo. Matt Revel and Mitch Skapski replied for the Bruins.
In the 6-1 win, the Cougars special teams lit the lamp with two shorthanded goals and a power-play goal. David Readman picked up the victory, while his partner in the net, Nathan Warren, made 32 saves in Sunday's win.
Brett Roulston had two goals for the Cougars in Saturday's game - his first game after sitting out last season with an injury.
The Cougars hit the road next weekend for a rematch of last season's championship final against the Northwest Vancouver Giants for a pair of games. The Giants tied their opening game 2-2 against the South Island Thunderbirds.
