Lonsdale key for Clippers in OT win over Spruce Kings

Nanaimo forward notches hat trick, has five-point game in 6-5 victory

Cole Lonsdale showed a Prince George hockey crowd the tools he has that make him top-10 scorer in the BC Hockey League.

The Nanaimo Clippers forward pulverized the Prince George Spruce Kings in their return to action from the Christmas break Saturday night at Kopar Memorial Arena, scoring three goals, including the overtime winner 3:20 into the extra session, to complete a five-point game.

Lonsdale leads the Clippers in scoring with 14 goals and 29 assists for 34 points in 28 games.

Trailing the Spruce Kings 5-3 midway through the third period, the 20-year-old Rochester Institute of Technology NCAA Div. 1 recruit triggered the comeback with his second of the game, on a Clipper power-play goal.

Then with just 55 seconds left and Nanaimo goalie Chazz Nixon on the bench for the extra skater, Luke Lavery made that gamble count, notching the tying goal, much to the disappointment of a pro-Kings crowd of 1,136 at Kopar.

The Clippers were outshot 45-29.

Carter Hesselgrave had a two-goal game, while Brock Cummings, Evan Bellamy and Mason Loewen also scored for the Spruce Kings.

Dylan Kinch fired in the other two for the visitors.

Nanaimo went 2-for-2 on the power play. The Kings were 1-for-4.

The same teams meet in the rematch Sunday at 3 p.m. at Kopar.
