Let's ride

Sprockids is not just a learn-how-to ride mountain bike program.

It teaches kids lessons in life.

In the workforce, at school, and on the off-road trails, there are hurdles around every corner, and Sprockids is just another way of making young riders aware they have the ability to smooth out even the gnarliest roadblocks.

"It is a cool program," said Prince George Cycling Club spokesperson Josh Staub. "It's always been a success and we just want to see it grow. Last year we had about 50 kids and this year we're trying to get 75 kids involved."

Using bike-related examples, Sprockids tackles such topics as goal-setting (a nonstop climb to the top of a steep hill), problem solving (how to jump over a fallen log on a trail) and decision-making (when to turn back on a trail so you don't get caught in the dark), all taught by qualified leaders whose own riding skills help them connect with the kids.

While presenting cycling as a lifelong activity, the program teaches kids how to interact in a group setting with an emphasis on developing respect and empathy for their peers and promoting better understanding of the environment and the responsibility of cyclists to protect the backcountry.

"They learn how to ride, but it also teaches them bike maintenance and safety," Staub said. "We ride at Otway [Nordic Centre) and the trails at Pidherny, where there's a skills course at the bottom of the hill."

Sprockids is geared toward kids aged nine to 12, but in previous years the club has had riders as old as 17 and as young as eight sign up for the program.

Sprockids sessions will take place on six consecutive Wednesdays from 6 - 8:30 p.m., until June 22.

The cost is $99 per rider. Registration deadline is today. Go to www.pgcyclingclub.ca for more details. All riders must pass an inspection of their bikes to be eligible for Sprockids.
