Think curling but substitute grass for ice.
Oh, and there's no sweeping.
The sport is lawn bowling, and the season is about to get rolling. With that in mind, the Prince George Lawn Bowling Club is offering free lessons.
Newcomers are being invited to play two introductory games so they can give the sport a try and learn the basic techniques and rules from club members. Games are held Tuesdays (10 a.m.), Wednesdays (7 p.m.), Thursdays (1 p.m.) and Sundays (2 p.m.) at the club's Watrous Street facility. Players should arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start times.
In lawn bowling, the ball -- or bowl, as it is called -- has a running surface that causes it to curl as it rolls down the green. A properly-thrown ball will move around guards to reach its intended target.
"The sport is not too difficult to learn and the club would like to have more people give it a try," said club member John Warner. "It offers a pleasant way to spend a few hours on a summer afternoon or evening and can be enjoyed by all ages."
The club will supply all the necessary equipment, except shoes. Footwear should be flat-soled with very little grip.
Warner said the club is welcoming and the regular cost to play is reasonable. Teams are picked prior to each game so beginners need not worry about getting on a team.
