Chad Staley likes to score goals for the Spruce Kings. Karan Toor likes to prevent them from going into the Kings' net.

Together, they make a formidable leadership team.

On Friday, the pair of 20-year-olds - Staley is a forward, while Toor is a defenceman - were named the Kings co-captains for the 2014-15 BCHL season.

Another 20-year-old forward, Justin Rai, was named the assistant captain.

Staley will wear the C during the Spruce Kings' home games at the Coliseum, while Toor will don the C when the squad is on the road.

Staley returns to the Kings for his third season with the Prince George club after leading the team in scoring last year with 29 goals and 33 assists for 62 points.

"Chad exemplifies what it means to be a Spruce King," said Kings general manager Mike Hawes. "He works very hard in every game and practice and whether it's supplying offence, playing good defence or blocking a shot, Chad always does everything he can for our team to be successful."

Toor is also entering his third season with the Kings after he finished last season with five goals and 26 assists for 31 points. He led all Spruce Kings players in blocked shots with 133 in 51 games. In the plus/minus ratings, he was a team-leading plus-30.

"Karan is widely regarded as one of the best overall defencemen in our league," said Hawes. "He's a tough competitor who plays very hard every time he's on the ice. He has really evolved into a tremendous leader on our team."

Rai too is entering his third campaign with the Kings. In 2013-14, he notched 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 points.

"Justin has worked very hard to adapt his game so that he can be successful at our level," said Hawes. "He has really developed into a very dangerous player and has put in a lot of hard work to get there. His commitment to being the best he can be and his commitment to the success of the Spruce Kings shows his leadership abilities."

The Kings will name another assistant captain soon after the start of the regular season when they face off against Nanaimo and Alberni Valley at the BCHL showcase weekend Sept. 20-21.

The Spruce Kings lost 4-3 in overtime to the Vernon Vipers Friday night in Vernon, their third loss in three games this exhibition season. The Kings will try to end the preseason with a win tonight at the Coliseum in a rematch with the Vipers. Game time is 7 p.m.
