After a five goal second-period outburst the Prince George Spruce Kings were on their way to defeating the Trail Smoke Eaters while clinching a spot in the British Columbia Hockey League post season.

Kings' defenceman Chase Golightly earned his third point of the night Friday in Trail when he assisted on Zack Rassell's third-period goal as the visitors' skated away with a 6-1 win.

Jujhar Kharia and Michael Colanton each had a goal and an assist in the Kings' win, while Gerry and Myles Fitzgerald tallied the other middle frame goals.

Ty Swabb was less than two minutes away from a shutout but Brent Baltus broke the bid with a power-play marker.

The win leaves the Kings (31-19-2-4) two points behind the Merritt Centennials (31-18-2-6) in the battle for second place, and home-ice advantage, in the Interior Conference. It also allowed the Kings to maintain a four-point lead over the fourth-place Chilliwack Chiefs (30-21-1-3), who hold a game in hand over Prince George.

The Kings and Smoke Eaters play again tonight at 7:30 p.m., before Prince George concludes the road trip in Vernon on Sunday at 2 p.m.
