The Prince George Junior Penguins found some overtime magic and came home with gold.
The Penguins, a female spring hockey team that skates in the peewee division, claimed top spot at a tournament in Richmond. In the championship game, the Pens defeated the B.C. Selects 2-1 in extra time on a goal by Amy Goetken. The decisive marker came 15 seconds into OT when Goetken knocked home a rebound off a shot by Jadyn Monical.
The Junior Penguins started the tournament with a 3-0 loss to the Selects. In their other games, they beat North Shore 9-1 and posted 3-1 and 2-0 wins against the Okanagan All-Stars. Multiple goal-scorers for the Penguins were Monical, Lani Loth, Kiera Mulder, Tashyla Teshuk and Nancy Court.
Also in Richmond, the Prince George Senior Penguins finished fourth in the Under-16 category. They began their tournament with a 5-1 loss to the Kootenay Selects but then won three consecutive games - 2-1 against Seattle, followed by a pair of 9-1 victories against A Academy and B Academy. The Penguins, however, finished up with two losses, 3-0 and 3-1 to the B.C. Selects.
Penguins players who had multiple goals in the tournament were Talia Knahulak, Jordan Shanks, Maddie Nicholson, Megan Goetken and Katya Levermann.
Both teams are coached by Norm Goetken.
