Judokas picked for nationals

Judo B.C. has picked its provincial teams and they are loaded with Prince George talent. Fourteen local judokas made the provincial grade and will now wear Team B.C. gear at national championship tournaments this spring and summer.

Judo B.C. has picked its provincial teams and they are loaded with Prince George talent.

Fourteen local judokas made the provincial grade and will now wear Team B.C. gear at national championship tournaments this spring and summer. Senior nationals will be held May 21-22 in Edmonton and junior nationals are scheduled for July 1-3 in Sept-Iles, Que.

P.G. athletes on the senior national team are Doug Gould (Hart Judo Academy), Paul Bryant (North Capital Judo Club), Aven Briggs (Prince George Judo Club) and Stefan Zwiers (Prince George Judo Club).

The junior national team includes Kristen Yawney, Kate Filipovic, Quinn Clemas and Elijah Zwiers, all of the PGJC. North Capital member Brandon Slooyer is also on the team, as are Hart athletes Byron Laass, Lavanna Laass, Sabrina Mori, John Rustad and Mark Whalley.

Aline Strasdin of the Prince George Judo Club and Bruce Kamstra of the Hart will serve as Team B.C. coaches at both national championships.
