Judokas excellent in Edmonton

Prince George judo athletes weren't in charitable moods at the Edmonton International tournament. They wanted all the gold for themselves. At the weekend competition, local judokas combined for 15 first-place finishes.

Prince George judo athletes weren't in charitable moods at the Edmonton International tournament.

They wanted all the gold for themselves.

At the weekend competition, local judokas combined for 15 first-place finishes. Athletes were representing the city's three clubs -- the Hart Judo Academy, the Prince George Judo Club and the North Capital Judo Club.

From the HJA, gold-medallists in various categories were Melissa Nelson, Elizabeth Simmons, Isaac Kamstra, Koen Heitman, Matthias Schenk, Christopher Nelson and Tristyn Fournier.

PGJC members who gave golden performances were Tami Goto, Josh Price, Drew Deevy, Brynne Deevy, Branden Edwards, Levi Price and Lisa Russell.

Brandon Slooyer from North Capital also finished with gold in his division.

Other results were as follows: Silver medals -- HJA, Grace Northrop, Byron Laass, Brendan Bellavance, Lavanna Laass and Lorna Jane Simmons; PGJC -- Bryce Hayashi, Ryan Russell, Taylor Schaus, Kyle Wilkinson and Kristen Yawney; NCJC -- Connor Slooyer.

Mike Fournier, who represented the HJA in the masters men's over-90-kilogram class, came home with a bronze medal.

North Capital judokas Nathan Gauthier (one win, one tie, two losses) and Braden Reed (two losses) also competed at the meet.
