Judo athletes shine at provincials

It was a family affair for Shawn Young and his three sons at the B.C. Judo Championships in Abbotsford on the weekend. Shawn won gold in the senior men intermediate -73-kilogram division, while son Asher won gold in the under-12 -30kg division.

Shawn won gold in the senior men intermediate -73-kilogram division, while son Asher won gold in the under-12 -30kg division. Asher's brother, Maxwell, battled to gold in the U16 juvenile men -46kg class. Not to be outdone, younger brother Lochlan won silver in the U14 boys -50kg class.

The Young clan trains out of the North Capital Judo Club and was among a club contingent that medaled at provincials.

Braeden Davis won gold in U18 cadet men novice, while Nicolas Richards grabbed silver in the U16 juvenile men -66kg division. Mike Fournier won silver in the senior men intermediate -100kg division.

Prince George was well represented at provincials, as athletes from the Hart Judo Academy and Prince George Judo Club also competed.

From the Hart, Joden Gallant won gold, while Gabriel Paterson, Madison McBurnie and Elizabeth Simmons won silver in the U12 category. Ethan Frizzell and Tula Moore won bronze.

In the U14 age category, Isaac Kamstra, Hamish Lamoureux, Christopher Cormack and Bowen Adams picked up silver medals, while Ioan Frizzell, Tristyn Fournier and Alex Ribeiro grabbed bronze medals.

Kimi Kamstra fought to gold in the U16 -44kg class; Grace Northrop won gold in the U18 -52kg division and Brendan Bellavance picked up silver in the U21 -100kg division. Lavanna Laass earned silver in the senior -63kg division.

Eighteen athletes from the Prince George Judo club medaled.

In junior boys, Logan Yon and Eli Dewar battled to silver, while Peyton Yon and Carter Latkowski won bronze.

In junior girls, Fallon Jones and Kyra Edgson grabbed silver medals and Angel Collier picked up bronze.

Tami Goto won gold in U14 girls and Sydney Edgson earned bronze.

Josh Price won silver in the U14 boys division.

Ryan Russell won gold in the U16 -50kg category, Branden Edwards picked up the gold medal in the -60kg division and Levi Price won silver.

Ryan Russell also brought home the silver medal in the U18 boys -50kg division, while Taylor Schaus brought home bronze. Kyle Wilkinson won silver in the -60kg division.

Lisa Russell won silver in the U18 girls -52kg class; Kristen Yawney picked up the silver medal in the U21 -70kg division, while Jordan Carstairs brought home silver in the senior men -90kg division.
