Cougars hand out letters, Connolly named captain

Was there any doubt Brett Connolly would be chosen captain of the Prince George Cougars?

Soon as the Cougars received the word Friday from the Tampa Bay Lightning that Connolly was on his way back to the WHL, the needle was set in motion to stitch that 'C' on his jersey.

Connolly, the Prince George minor hockey product and 2008-09 CHL rookie of the year, arrived in Kelowna only a couple hours before the Cats took to the ice in Kamloops but was there in time to open the season against the Blazers.

"I'm pretty confident I can lead this team to some wins and have everybody follow suit," said the 18-year-old Connolly, introduced with his assistant captains at Wednesday news conference at CN Centre.

"I was an assistant captain last year and I've played with a lot of captains like Dana (Tyrell) and Thies (Garrett Thiessen) and I'll take the good and bad of what they did and for me, I just want to work hard every day and lead by example and try to get everybody on the same page here. I'm looking forward to it, it's exciting for me."

Brock Hirsche, James Dobrowolski, Jesse Forsberg and newcomer Charles Inglis were named the Cougars' assistant captains.
