Hockey with a cause

It's your chance to be a champion, and get to know a championship-calibre athlete.

It's your chance to be a champion, and get to know a championship-calibre athlete.

The Prince George Family Y, with help from sponsors such as Wood Wheaton, the Jim Pattison Group and The Prince George Citizen, is giving local sports enthusiasts a chance to rub shoulders with the most-respected Canucks player in team history.

Trevor Linden will be in Prince George for a meet-and-greet and a banquet slated for Oct. 1, part of the I'm A Champion celebration of hockey.

Why this idea, and why this sport? It's easy -- Prince George is a hockey town, pure and simple, and the leadership of the Family Y realized no other sport has such broad community appeal.

Linden will not skate in the six-team recreational hockey tournament, a non-competitive event that is meant to allow for networking through the game of hockey. Anyone who signs up as a hockey player gets to take part in the meet-and-greet with Linden.

For information on how to register, go to the Family Y website -- www.pgymca.com -- or go to the front desk at the Y. People are able to sign up both as individuals, or entire teams.
