Mekenna Parker left no doubt that, within her peer group, she's one of B.C.'s top gymnasts.
At the Twisters Invitational, one of the most prestigious meets of the year, Parker secured the all-around championship in the Level 2 tyro category. Competing in Abbotsford on the weekend, Parker placed first on the uneven bars and second on vault, balance beam and floor exercise.
Several other local gymnasts also gave shining performances in Abbotsford. One of the most impressive efforts was turned in by Alia Wilson, who finished eighth in the all-around standings for pre-novice aspire athletes. Wilson was competing for just the second time in the pre-novice category and didn't let the pressure affect her. On the uneven bars, she was spectacular and placed second with a score of 13.00. In her other disciplines, Wilson was fifth on vault, eighth on balance beam and eighth on floor exercise.
Other P.G. gymnasts at Twisters were Anna MacDonald, Lina Goto, Bronwyn Ellington, Rhiana Palfy and Jessica Pallot.
In Level 3 novice, MacDonald was ninth all-around and posted her best individual result on balance beam, where she placed third. In Level 5 open, Goto ended up 10th all-around. Her highest individual placing was a sixth on vault. Ellington, in Level 2 argo, was 12th all-around thanks in part to a sixth-place finish on vault. In Level 3 novice, Palfy was 13th in the all-around standings. Her best individual result came on vault, where she finished fourth. As for Pallot, she was 19th all-around in Level 3 tyro. Her top individual showing was a ninth-place result on beam.
