Prince George minor hockey product Michael Garteig of Quinnipiac University has been put on the watch list as a candidate for the NCAA's Mike Richter most outstanding goaltender award, the B.C. Hockey League announced Wednesday.

Garteig, 22, is coming off a stellar sophomore season with the Bobcats, based in Hamden, Conn. In 40 games in 2013-14, he compiled a 1.94 goals-against average with six shutouts, a .910 save percentage and finished with a 24-10-6 record. He played three seasons in the BCHL with Powell River and Penticton.

In 2011, Garteig tied former Prince George Spruce King Brad Thiessen's league record for shutouts in a season with seven.

Two other BCHL alumni, Cole Huggins of Minnesota State University (Coquitlam, Langley, BCHL) and Joel Rumpel of the University of Wisconsin (Penticton, BCHL) were also identified as potential candidates for the Richter award.

The watch list is based on a preseason poll of the 59 NCAA Division 1 men's team head coaches.
