Michael Garteig made 24 saves in net for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats to lock up a 4-1 win over the Harvard Crimson in the NCAA East Coast Athletic Conference championship final Saturday in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Tim Clifton, Bo Pieper, K.J. Tiefenwerth, and Scott Davidson, into an empty net, all scored for the Bobcats, who claimed the first Whitelaw Cup in the program's history at Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac (29-3-7) will be ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Tournament, which features the top 16 Division 1 teams in U.S. college.
Garteig, who grew up in Prince George, was named to the ECAC All-Tournament team. He also picked up an assist on Clifton's goal, which opened the scoring. On Friday, Garteig made 23 saves in a 3-1 semifinal win over Dartmouth.
Garteig, 24, was the Bobcats' nominee for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA most outstanding player but did not make it to the top-10 list of finalists. In 39 games this season he posted a 29-3-7 record with a 1.90 goals-against average and .923 save percentage while recording nine shutouts.
