The Northland Dodge Northern Cougars rebounded after an ugly loss to beat the visiting West Coast Avalanche 3-2 at Kin 1 Sunday.

It was the third game of a three-game homestand as the Cougars opened their B.C. female midget triple-A hockey season with a 2-1 record.

On Sunday, the Cougars skated out to a 3-0 lead, one they held until late in the third period when the Coquitlam-based Avalanche netted a couple of goals.

Victoria Byer, Ava Keis and Chantelle Beadman-Rolph tallied for the Cats, while Marissa Nichol had two helpers.

Rookie Emilie Nichol turned aside 27 shots, many from point-blank range, in her first triple-A midget contest.

Sunday's effort was much better than Saturday's when the Avs blanked the Cougars 5-0.

West Coast goalie Stephanie Hogg was outstanding, stopping all 30 of the Cougars shots.

Goaltending duties were shared by Nichol and veteran Kesley Roberts.

The Cougars opened their homestand with a 4-2 win Friday night.

The squads were tied 2-2 after 40 minutes until Byer fired the game-winning shot that got past Hogg during a power play.

Forwards Taylor Beck and Grace Barlow each had one goal and two assists, with their linemate Hunter Mosher adding a goal.

Roberts swept aside 26 of 28 shots.

The Cougars travel to Vernon this weekend to battle the Thompson/Okanagan Lakers.

They return home to the Kin rinks for a three-game set Oct. 3-5 against the Kootenay Wildcats.
