Esopenko strokes to B.C. gold

Hannah Esopenko touched the wall first to win gold in the 200-metre individual medley at the Swim B.C. long course provincial championships in Victoria last weekend.

With a time of two minutes, 23.12 seconds, Esopenko's winning swim was among six top-five finishes for the Prince George Barracudas member.

Esopenko grabbed bronze medals in the 100m breaststroke (1:13.20) and 200m breaststroke (2:43.32). She placed fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:25.87) and fifth in both the 200 freestyle (2:12.60) and 200 fly (2:25.87).

She was also fifth in the 400 free (4:41.13) and 12th in both the 800 free (9:47.33) and 100 fly (1:07.22).

Esopenko was among 13 Barracudas who competed at the long course provincials.

Sam Marchand posted six top-10 swims - the best was fifth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:32.82.

Marchand was seventh in the 400 IM (5:24.26) and 200 backstroke (2:29.99), and eighth in the 200 IM (2:33.53) and 50 back (32.84). He was also ninth in the 200 free (2:17.60), 14th in the 100 fly (1:09.95) and 22nd in the 50 fly (32.35).

Alexandra Winkel posted four top-10 results, with seventh-place finishes in the 400 free (4:43.51) and 400 IM (5:18.95). She placed ninth in the 800 free (9:43.88) and 10th in the 200 free (2:12.65). She was 12th in the 200 fly (2:33.20), 19th in the 100 fly (1:09.17) and 27th in the 200 back (2:38.11).

Club member Mackenzie Lewington was 13th in the 400 free (4:57.63), 14th in the 1,500 free (19:37.70) and 15th in the 400 free (4:58.35). She was also 20th in the 200 free (2:24.00), 21st in the 200 back (2:41.18), 22nd in the 200 free (2:38.57), 24th in the 200 breast (3:04.83) and 27th in the 100 fly (1:15.60).

Jenna Korolek had a pair of top-20 finishes, with a 15th-place showing in the 50 breaststroke (38.30) and a 19th-place result in the 100 breast (1:27.55). She was 23rd in the 200 breast (3:07.62) and 33rd in the 50 free (30.93).

Kayla Korolek had three top-20 finishes: 11th in the 50 breast (36.74), 13th in the 200 IM (2:33.57) and 19th in the 400 IM (5:32.04). She placed 24th in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.78), 25th in the 800 free (10:11.51) and 26th in both the 200 free (2:18.59) and 200 breaststroke (2:58.59).

Jackson Girard placed 16th in the 200 breaststroke (2:58.23), 24th in the 400 IM (5:45.25) and 26th in the 400 free (5:09.30). He was 27th in both the 200 back (2:42.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:25.03) and 29th in the 200 fly (2:55.22) and 200 IM (2:43.13).

Gareth Lamb was 23rd in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.42), 24th in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.69) and 26th in the 50 breaststroke (33.16).

Brayden Phillips placed 22nd in the 50m breaststroke (40.24), 26th in the 1,500 free (20:27.03), 29th in the 400 free (5:17.57), 30th in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.52) and 33rd in the 400 IM (5:58.09).

Skylar Lewington placed 22nd in the 800 free (10:04.95), and 23rd in the 200 free (2:18.32), 400 free (4:52.52), and 400 IM (5:35.96).

Jordan Ozcan finished 25th in both the 50 fly (27.93) and 50 breaststroke (32.91), 29th in the 400 free (4:37.85), and 31st in the 100 breast (1:16.23).

Alivia Soares finished 22nd in the 400 IM (5:34.06), 28th in the 800 free (10:17.91), 33rd in the 200 fly (2:50.33) and 35th in the 400 free (5:02.84).

Hannah Coates placed 27th in the 800 free (10:17.66), 30th in the 200 fly (2:42.38) and 33rd in both the 50 fly (32.56) and 400 free (5:00.18).
