The Westwood Pub Devils kept their streak of perfection intact Friday night to emerge as the early frontrunners in the Treasure Cove Casino senior provincial invitational lacrosse tournament.
The Devils ran their record to 2-0 at the five-team tournament with a 9-4 win over the Port Moody Express at Kin 1.
With the victory, Westwood extended its winning streak to 20 games, dating back to the start of their season in the Prince George Senior Lacrosse Association.
Cameron Braun fired a pair of goals for the PGSLA champs and Andrew Schwab was a constant thorn in the side of the Express with a goal and two assists. Shaun O'Leary notched a hat trick for Port Moody.
The Devils led 3-2 after one period. Braun scored shorthanded right before the break to put the boys in orange ahead, capitalizing on a superb team penalty kill.
O'Leary brought the visitors back to even terms with his third goal of the game less than a minute into the second period, but the Devils answered right back when Braun popped in the rebound. Andrew Sivell gave the Devils a 5-3 cushion heading into the third period.
Colton Poulin set the pace for the Devils early in the third period, timing a moving screen perfectly as he unleashed a long sidewinder just as Sobhnik Manhas cut across the line of sight of Express goalie Andrew Copeland.
That was the first of four goals for the Devils in the final frame. Danton Nicholson finished with a goal and three helpers.
Devils goalie Jamie Bellamy was at his best early in the third period when the score was tight, making several key saves before the Devils began to pull away.
The Devils began with a 15-7 win Friday afternoon over the BX Pub Bandits.
Schwab scored a pair, as did Scott Anderson, and Jamie Klarenbeek.
Drew Doig and Mike Quarin countered with a pair for the Bandits.
In Friday's other game, the Northland Nissan Assault defeated the Cowboy Ranch/Regional Security Stylers 17-5.
The Assault, which has struggled with a shortage of players all season, received some help from the Ladner Pioneers of the WCSLL and three of those player pickups made offensive impacts.
Tom Potter collected three goals and three assists, Allister Graham contributed two goals and four assists and Cale Gilbertson also scored.
John Makowsky led the way for the Assault with five goals and five assists and Brian McCaidy of Fort St. John had four goals.
Brandin Daychief and Matt Rochon paced the Stylers, each with two goals and two assists.
Action resumes today at Kin 1 starting at 10 a.m., when the Devils and Stylers clash.
