After a chilly start, Kady Dandeneau and the UNBC Northern Timberwolves cranked up the heat on the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles.

In a women's basketball game Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre, the Timberwolves downed the Surrey-based Eagles 80-54. UNBC trailed 20-14 after the first quarter but outscored Kwantlen 66-34 the rest of the way. The T-wolves were especially dominant in the third quarter. During those 10 minutes, they poured in 27 points and only allowed six.

Dandeneau, a third-year forward, finished the contest with 25 points and nine rebounds. On the night, she nailed a trio of three-pointers.

"She struggled out of the gate and then she turned it around and was offensively very, very good," UNBC head coach Loralyn Murdoch said of Dandeneau. "Nine rebounds is pretty respectable as well."

Heading into the game, Dandeneau, with 158 points in nine outings, was leading the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association in scoring average.

Maria Neumann, a third-year post player for UNBC, added 12 points and rookie guard Mercedes Van Koughnett picked up six assists.

Guards Taminder Dhaliwal (18 points) and Jessica Williams (16 points) were the top shooters for the Eagles.

UNBC moved to 9-1 on the season and Kwantlen dropped to 6-4.

Later Friday night, the UNBC men defeated a short-staffed Kwantlen club 101-79.

Inderbir Gill and Jose Araujo both scored 22 points for the T-wolves (9-1). The Eagles (3-7), who had just six players in uniform, were led by Varinder Singh, who had 32 points and nine rebounds. The teams will do battle again tonight. The women's game will start at 6 and the men will be on the floor at 8.
