Dahms delivers chilling blow to Boese

Former junior rivals combine for first Kelly Cup win

Michael Dahms required a clean sweep to drive away with his first Kelly Cup men's curling championship Sunday and his front-end suspension stood up to the test.

A blur of brooms and some frantic arm motions from second J.T. Blanchett and lead Matt Gyofri allowed Dahms to freeze his first shot in the 10th end at the head of a four-rock train and that carried him to an 8-5 win over Garnet Boese in Sunday's final at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.

"It came down to the point where I was just ready to pass out, it was just lay it all on the line because that's it -- no guts, no glory," said the 24-year-old Gyofri.

Dahms scored two in the ninth end to gain some breathing room, and his successful freeze left Boese little choice but to try a low-percentage runback on the last shot of the game which missed, guaranteeing Dahms and his crew their first-ever victory sips from the Kelly Cup.

"This is a big one for our team, it was a long one to get through all these games and it's an awesome feeling," said Dahms, 24, who went undefeated in eight games, including a 7-0 win in four ends over Tobin Senum of Kamloops in the A-event final, who also lost 6-1 to Dahms in the Kelly semifinal.
