Cougars Spooktacular at tournament

The College Heights Cougars were such gracious hosts at their Spooktacular Invitational volleyball tournament on the weekend that they went and scared the rest of their guests away.

The College Heights Cougars were such gracious hosts at their Spooktacular Invitational volleyball tournament on the weekend that they went and scared the rest of their guests away.

The Cougars junior boys A1 squad went undefeated and beat their co-hosts, the junior A2 team, in straight sets (25-17, 25-19) to win the championship on Saturday.

The tournament featured 10 high school teams from Prince George, including junior and senior sides from Duchess Park, D.P. Todd, Kelly Road Road, PGSS and host College Heights.

The journey to the gold medal for the junior A1 Cougars included a 2-0 (25-13, 25-14) semifinal victory against Kelly Road's senior squad as well as a 2-0 (25-20, 25-13) quarter-final win against D.P. Todd's junior A1 team.

The A1 Cougars were also unscathed in the round robin, posting a 4-0 record with victories against the PGSS seniors, Duchess Park junior A's, Duchess Park seniors and College Heights junior A2's.

The junior A2 Cougars were 2-2 in round-robin, securing victories over Duchess Park's A2 side and PGSS. Besides the A1 Cougars, they lost to the Duchess Park seniors.

The A2 Cougars bounced back in the playoffs, defeating Duchess Park junior A 2-1 (25-15, 22-25, 15-13) in the quarter-finals and the Duchess Park senior squad 2-0 (25-23, 25-21) in the other semifinal.

The senior Condors bested Kelly Road 2-0 (25-19, 25-23) in the third-place match to win the bronze medal.

College Heights junior B finished fifth, the PGSS senior Polars were sixth, followed by Duchess Park junior A in seventh and D.P. Todd junior A1 in eighth spot. Duchess Park's junior A2 squad was ninth, while the D.P. Todd junior A2 side finished 10th.

All-stars included: Mason Obranovic (D.P. Todd junior A2), Nick Husband (Duchess Park junior B), Quinton Astorino (College Heights junior B), Mike Schwab (D.P. Todd junior A1), Jarod Macpherson (Kelly Road senior), Nigel Thompson (College Heights junior A1), Fintan Daly (College Heights junior A2) and Carter Karpenko (Duchess Park junior A).

The junior Cougars are competing at Duchess Park's invitational tournament this weekend.
