Special teams were the difference as the Prince George Cougars snapped an eight-game losing streak Saturday, defeating the Vancouver Giants 2-1.
Greg Fraser gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead midway through the second period of the Western Hockey League game at CN Centre with a shorthanded goal and Alex Forsberg secured the win with a power-play marker, breaking a 1-1 draw late in the third period.
James Henry had the Giants' goal on a power play late in the middle frame.
Prince George was 1-for-3 with the man advantage, while killing off six of the Giants' seven power plays.
The 1,855 fans at the game watched as Cougars' goaltender Drew Owsley stopped 28 shots - 15 in the second period when the home team was out shot 16-4. Jackson Whistle took the loss for the Giants, making 16 saves.
The win was the third in October for the Cougars (4-11-0-1) and first of the season over the Giants (8-7-0-1). Vancouver has won two games against the Cougars, including Friday's 4-2 win.
Prince George has played 10 of its first 16 games on the road.
The Cougars have five home games in November, starting Friday and Saturday when they host the B.C. Division leading Kamloops Blazers (11-3-0-0) at 7 p.m.
