The Prince George Cougars ended their season with a 4-0 loss to the home-team Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday night.

The loss left the Cats in fourth place in the B.C. Division with a 9-10-2-1 record. The 47-day, 52 game WHL season wrapped up on Wednesday, with no playoffs scheduled.

The Blazers, with a 18-4-0-0 record, were named the RE/MAX Cup Champions after beating the Cats. The Cougars only won a single game in their six-game B.C. Division series against the red-hot Blazers.

“The Western Hockey League is very pleased to have completed the 2020-21 B.C. Division Regular Season in the RE/MAX Hub Centres in Kamloops and Kelowna, in a highly successful way,” WHL commissioner Ron Robison said in a statement issued on Thursday. "A special thanks is extended to the players and staff of the Kamloops Blazers, Kelowna Rockets, Prince George Cougars, Vancouver Giants, and Victoria Royals, as well as our officials, for their diligence in complying by the protocols put in place to ensure the health and safety of all involved. Your sacrifices and commitment to this effort have proven that the WHL Return to Play model is an effective means of delivering a safe, competitive environment for our players to continue their development in."

Robison thanked provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Interior Health for having confidence the WHL's ability to hold a safe season during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Wednesday's game, netminder Taylor Gauthier stopped 34 of 38 shots. The Cougars put 28 shots on Blazer's goalie Dylan Garand, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Cats were zero for two on the powerplay.

Cougars captain Jack Sanders hung up his WHL jersey for the final time on Wednesday. The 21-year-old defenceman from Beaumont, Alta. was drafted by the Cougars in 2017.

Sanders played 203 career games with the Cougars, racking up nine goals and 38 assists in four seasons.

"The entire Cougars organization congratulates Jack on his WHL career and wishes all the best in his future hockey endeavours," a statement issued by the team on Wednesday said.
