Cougars lose a close one

Once again, the Medicine Hat Tigers struck too fast and too often to be tamed.

Once again, the Medicine Hat Tigers struck too fast and too often to be tamed.

In a battle of WHL Cats Wednesday, the Tigers clawed the Prince George Cougars in their own den for the second straight night, surviving a late-game Cougar comeback to feast on a 5-4 triumph.

A four-goal first period doomed the Cougars to their 39th defeat this season and 11 straight loss. They've won just once in 12 games in 2010.

Wacey Hamilton, Joey Frazer, Linden Vey, Bretton Cameron, and Matt MacKay scored for the Central Division-leading Tigers, who improved their record to 31-15-3-5, third-best in the Eastern Conference. MacKay's gamewinner came 4:29 into the third period.

James Dobrowolski made it close, scoring with 2:54 left. The Cougars had their chances to tie it with goalie Hudson Stremmel on the bench but couldn't put another puck past Deven Dubyk, who made 36 saves. Stremmel stopped 34 shots.

Alex Rodgers, Parker Stanfield, Nick Buonassisi, who had two assists, also scored for the Cougars (9-39-1-1).

The Tigers took a five-goal lead in the first period Tuesday and went on to win 9-3.
