Drew Owsley did his part in stopping 50 shots the Edmonton Oil Kings fired at him Wednesday at Rexall Place, but his Prince George Cougars teammates were unable to provide the 20 year old any offensive support as they fell 5-0 to the top team in the Western Hockey League's Eastern
Conference.
The Oil Kings (30-11-1-4) scored twice on the power play, while Michael St. Croix had the natural hat trick, as they dominated the visiting Cougars (15-27-0-2) in the final 40 minutes, firing 47 pucks at Owsley. The Cougars could only muster 10 shots on Edmonton's Laurent Brossoit in the final two periods. Prince George out-shot the Oil Kings 16-8 in the first period, but trailed 2-0.
Through seven games in January the Cougars are 2-5 and have scored 11 goals - 10 in two games against the Lethbridge Hurricanes last weekend.
Despite the loss, the Cougars remained one point out of the eighth, and final, playoff spot in the Western Conference as the Victoria Royals (14-27-2-3) fell 2-0 in Moose Jaw. Prince George has two games in hand on the Royals.
Tonight the Cougars continue their Alberta road swing with a game in Calgary against the Hitmen.
