Cougars fire blanks at Americans

Drew Owsley did his best Superman impression in the Prince George Cougars' net, but it wasn't enough as he was charged with his fifth loss of the WHL season.

Drew Owsley did his best Superman impression in the Prince George Cougars' net, but it wasn't enough as he was charged with his fifth loss of the WHL

season.

The Cougars (3-7-0-1) fell 1-0 to the Tri-City Americans (9-4) at CN Centre as 1,855 fans witnessed the offensively challenged Cougars record their fourth straight loss.

Owsley, at five-foot-eight, stood tall in the Cougars' net, stretching across his crease on several occasions to poke pucks out of harm's way.

The 20-year-old goaltender stopped 31 shots against his former team, but was beaten during the final minute of the second period, during the Americans' second two-man

advantage of the night.

Meanwhile, the Cougars could only muster 16 shots at Tri-City rookie Eric Comrie - the younger half-brother of NHL player Mike Comrie - with most of the shots simple saves for the 16 year old.

It's the third time in their last four games the Cougars have failed to score a goal.

The Cougars played most of the final five minutes of the second period shorthanded, which eventually led to the Americans finally beating Owsley when Adam Hughesman slipped his 12th goal of the season past the Cougars' goaltender during a five-on-three advantage.

Cougar killer Justin

Feser and Brendan Shinnimin assisted on Hughesman's goal. Feser led the Americans with four goals in four games against Prince George last season and has seven goals and 11 career points against the Cougars.

The Cougars and Americans split their four games last season with each side victorious twice.

Owsley stopped all 12 shots he faced in the opening period, several of the unbelievable variety, to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

The Western Conference rivals face off again tonight at CN Centre (7 p.m.)

before the Cougars embark on a two-game road trip against B.C. Division rivals, the Vancouver Giants and Kelowna Rockets.
