The Kelly Road Roadrunners kept it close for one half.
But after the intermission there was no stopping the Duchess Park Condors.
The defending high school football champions of the Northern League scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Roadrunners 40-6 Friday at Masich Place Stadium to improve to 2-0 this season.
Inspired by T.J. Kyriakos and his 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the Condors' offence came to life in the second half and quarterback Rylan Matters had success finding his favourite target, Caleb Cruise, who hauled in four catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns.
"Kelly Road came prepared and so did we and we covered their run quite well but we didn't execute in the first half, our timing was off," said Condors head coach Mike Rositano. "Kelly Road played well but in the second half we made adjustments and they couldn't stop our run game."
Cruise went out of his way to make it a tough night for Kelly Road quarterback Garrett Cape, who had four passes picked off. The Condors blitz forced Cape out of the pocket on numerous occasions, which killed the Kelly Road passing game.
Matters went 8-for-16 with his passes for 135 yards. The Condors put up 441 yards of total offence, including 306 rushing yards. Cape went 3-for-13 for 44 yards and one touchdown, a 25-yard strike to David Sephton
Matt Pike collected 102 yard rushing for the Roadrunners on 22 carries and also led Kelly Road defensively with nine tackles. Cape also made his presence felt on the defensive line with seven tackles.
The Condors opened the season Sept. 12 with a 61-0 win over the College Heights Cougars.
"It is always good to come up against a team of the Condors' level early in the season so the players see where they need to get to by the end of the season," said Roadrunners head coach Ryan Bellamy.
Kelly Road takes on Correlieu of Quesnel this Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Masich Place Stadium. The Condors' next game is set for Friday against Nechako Valley of Vanderhoof.
