The Duchess Park Condors winged their way to a bronze medal at the KSS/UBCO Best of the West senior boys volleyball tournament on the weekend.
At the 37-team event, the Condors qualified for the 16-team Gold Division playoffs. There, they opened with a victory against Sturgeon Composite of Alberta and then defeated Delta in the quarterfinal round. But, in the semis, Duchess fell to Fraser Heights of Surrey. Fraser Heights, ranked No. 1 in B.C. in the triple-A division, went on to claim gold when it beat Harry Ainlay of Edmonton in the championship match.
The Condors, ranked third in the province in the double-A category, were relegated to the bronze-medal match, where they downed the Kelowna Owls. Kelowna entered the weekend ranked sixth in the triple-A division.
The College Heights Cougars, meanwhile, were the Black Division champions (17th overall). They posted an overall record of 6-1, their only loss a 15-25, 28-26, 15-13 setback to Holy Trinity of Edmonton in their first match. They then rolled to wins against D.W. Poppy of Langley and Clarence Fulton of Vernon to finish second in their pool.
In the Black Division playoffs, the Cougars picked up victories against Princess Margaret of Penticton, George Elliot of Winfield, St. Georges of Vancouver and then knocked off Revelstoke 22-25, 25-17, 16-14 in the final.
The Cougars started the weekend ranked 10th in B.C. in the double-A division, while George Elliot was No. 6 and Revelstoke was No. 5.
The Kelly Road Roadrunners also participated at the Best of the West gathering. They will host a tournament this weekend.
