The Cedars Christian Eagles' prey is coming into focus.
They've traveled to Sparwood, in the southeast corner of the province, on a mission to win the single-A girls basketball championship and, after a 71-24 win Thursday over the Mulgrave Titans of West Vancouver, are two wins away from that goal.
Kayla Gordon set the tone with seven points in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 22 to lead the Eagle cause. Karly Goertzen also got into the act offensively, scuttling the title hopes of the sixth-ranked Titans with a 17-point outburst. Janene Giesbrecht had a 10-point game for Eagles, who led 59-37 at the half.
In a semifinal game today at 5:20 p.m. the No. 3-ranked Eagles will take on the host Sparwood Spartans, who beat Lakes District of Burns Lake 41-32 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, at the double-A girls provincial championship in Kamloops, the D.P. Todd Trojans dropped into the consolation round after a 91-38 loss to York House of Vancouver.
The Trojans were down 48-27 at the half and scored only 11 points in the entire second half. They hit just 26.4 per cent of their field goals in the game.
Jamie Macfarlane sunk 11 points to lead the Trojans. Tenley Pearce, the Trojans' player of the game, had four points and four rebounds. Forward Piper Hoekstra, who suffered an ankle injury in the Trojans' opening game Wednesday, sat out most of the second half and was held to four points.
D.P. Todd will take on Lambrick Park of Victoria today at 10:45 a.m.
The Nechako Valley Viqueens of Vanderhoof played Britannia of Vancouver Thursday night. The score was not available at press time.
At the double-A boys tournament, also in Kamloops, the College Heights Cougars won a 65-64 nailbiter over the Clarence Fulton Maroons of Vernon to even the Cougars' record at 1-1. Nolan Hanson led the Cougars with 17 points, while Domnick Manhas and Matt Badial contributed 14 and 11 points respectively. Manhas hit three from beyond the arc.
College Heights will play Southridge of Surrey today at 12:30 p.m.
At the triple-A girls tournament in North Vancouver, the PGSS Polars dropped to 0-2 Thursday, losing 71-39 to the Maple Ridge Ramblers. Mauvia Nijjier, with 16 points, and Emily Aase, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, were the statistical leaders for PGSS.
The Polars will play New Westminster in a consolation round game today at 8:30 a.m.
At the junior girls provincial championship in Abbotsford, the No. 15 Duchess Park Condors fell to 0-2. The Condors lost 66-25 Thursday to No. 2 ranked Riverside of Port Coquitlam, then dropped a 48-37 decision later in the day to Maple Ridge. The Condors play Jaffray today at 9:30 a.m.
The 13th-ranked PGSS Polars lost their tournament-opener 43-22 to No. 4 Oak Bay of Victoria. The Polars were on the court for an 8 p.m. game Thursday night against St. Michael's.
