The start of what could become a Catholic school tradition happens today on the soccer pitches at Rotary Field.

Twelve teams from four schools are entered in today's inaugural Terry Wilson Memorial Cup.

The one-day tournament has been set up to commorate the contributions of Wilson to youth soccer and catholic education following his arrival in Prince George from Northern Ireland in 1986.

Three Prince George schools -- Sacred Heart, St. Mary's, Immaculate Conception, and one Quesnel school - St. Anne's -- will be represented on the field by teams of Grade 6 and 7 students playing on mixed-gender teams.

St. Mary's and Immaculate Conception will enter four teams each, while Sacred Heart and St. Anne's will have two teams each on the field.

The teams will be divided into four pools and after playing two games against pool opponents, the top teams from each pool will meet in the semifinal round. A championship final and two consolation finals to follow. The Cup will be awarded to the championship game winners.

One male player and one female player will be selected for most valuable player awards.

Wilson, a former rep team coach in the Prince George Youth Soccer Association who moved to Alberta in 2002, died last year at age 47 after a battle with brain cancer.
