The Cariboo Cougars have nominated team member Sam Brennan for a major academic award.

The Cats have put Brennan's name forward for a scholarship sponsored by the Mac's AAA Midget Hockey Tournament. Each year, five players who compete in the world-famous Mac's event are handed scholarships.

"There is a very in-depth process Sam will go through and, should he win, he will find it very exciting and prestigious as the Mac's take these awards very seriously," said Cougars manager Andy Beesley.

Beesley added that numerous Cougars players are worthy of receiving Mac's scholarships.

"This was a difficult decision for the coaching staff as there are several boys who could potentially win this award," he said. "Congratulations to all the other high-achievers and we wish all the best luck to Sam in his quest to win."

All of the 15- to 17-year-old Cougars attend Prince George secondary school, where they work closely with teacher Renzo Berra, who serves as the liaison between the school and the team and also runs the PGSS hockey program.

Berra said 15 Cougars players earned "Excellence in Personal Achievement" status on their report cards, meaning they ranked "good" or higher for their work habits in each course.

"Also, nine players achieved straight As and Principal's List recognition, and four others earned Honour Roll status," Berra said. "Three other students were within five per cent of achieving Honour Roll on their report cards as well."
