It was a heartbreaker for Canucks fans in the gold-medal game of the 2012 Peewee Cougar Classic.
The Prince George Canucks finished round-robin play with a 4-0 record but fell to the Prince George Canadiens 4-3 in the final Sunday at CN Centre.
The mixed gender six-team tournament was hosted by the Prince George Best Western City Centre peewee female Cougars.
The only other female team was the Cougars main rivals, the
Williams Lake Timberwolves.
Victoria Johnston, a Cougars' defenceman, said she likes
playing against the boys' teams.
"It's more challenging to play against them," said Johnston.
In the final the Canucks trailed 2-1 after two periods.
Tyler Macsemniuk and Brandon Gill gave the Canadiens a 4-1 lead when they scored 19 seconds apart in the third period, but the Canucks wouldn't give up. Ethan Goggin and Dane Neufeld pulled the Canucks within a goal but it was all they could muster.
The P.G. Maple Leafs took the bronze medal with a 5-3 win over the P.G. Oilers, while the Cougars shut out the Timberwolves 2-0 for fifth place. Olivia Johnson earned the shut out for the Cougars.
Head to head this season the Cougars have the T-wolves' number posting a 5-1-1 record. The two teams will face each other in a best-of-three northern playdown Feb. 25 for a spot in the provincial championship in
Richmond March 18 to 23.
The Cougars earned about $2,300 from the tournament to go towards travel expenses for the rest of the season.
